Dr. Virginia Apgar
For her friendship, gaiety, interest in
student activities, her devotion
to her profession, and her alacrity
and rapid stream of conversation,
the Class of 1957 dedicates its yearbook
to Virginia Apgar, doctor and teacher.
The Oath of Hippocrates
ISWI;HR by Hpollo the physician, & Aesculapius, & Hygeia,
and Panacea, and all the gods and goddesses, that according to
my ability and judgment I will keep this oath and this stipula'
tion: to reckon him who taught me this Hrt equally dear to me as
my parents, to share my substance with him and relieve his necessities
if required; to look upon his offspring as my own brothers and to teach
them this Hrt, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation;
and that by precept, lefture, and every other mode of instruction I will
impart a knowledge of the Hrt to my own sons and those of my teachers,
and to disc'ples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of
medicine, but to none others. I will follow that system of regimen which
according to my ability and judgment I consider for the benefit of my
patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I
will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such
counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to pre
duce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and
practise my Hrt. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but
will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into
whatever houses I enter I will go into them for the benefit of the sick
and will abstain from every voluntary aft of mischief and corruption; &
further, from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves.
Whatever, in conneftion with my professional prafticc or not in conncc
tion with it, I see or hear in the life of men which ought not to be spoken of
abroad,I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret.
While I continue to keep this oath unviolated may it be granted to me
to enjoy life and the prafticc of the Hrt, respeftcd by all men & all times.
But should I trespass and violate this oath may the reverse be my lot.
Dr. Andre Cournand
Dr. Dickinson Richards
For their work in
cardio-respiratory physiology.
Doctors Andre Cournand,
Werner Forssmann, and
Dickinson W. Richards were
awarded the Nobel Prize
in October 1956.

For sixty-two years the P & S Club lias presented its broad program of
social, spiritual, athletic, and cultural activities as an aid in enriching student
life at P & S. This year the program was extended and improved to provide
even more opportunities of participation and entertainment. Mr. Edwin M.
Barton, Director of Student Activities, has continued to provide the service,
advice, and encouragement which have contributed so effectively to the con-
tinuing expansion of the club. The twenty three committees of the P & S Club
included more than one-quarter of the student body in active participation in
this year's extracurricular life.
Athletics: Warren Seides, '57 Chairman; Charles Bucknam, Alfred Moscar-
ella, Richmond Prescott, and John Eleuteri. The program included an intra-
mural league and intercollegiate competition in basketball, and participation
in the Metropolitan Squash League, Class C.
Pier Mancusi-Ungaro and Bob Bertsch, co-chairmen of the Christmas Party,
presented an exceptionally fine Christmas program and dance. Participation
by the Vespers Choir, the present and past Bards, a second-year chorus, and
the Student-Faculty Orchestra were the highlights of the program. Committee
members were Al Mathies, Andrew Ferber, Brad Gordon, John Eleuteri, Fred
Allen and Ellvn Jones.

The concert program for the year, including such notables as pianist Gary
Graffman, was arranged by Reddington Barrett, Chairman, Peter Dunne, Gene
Phillips, and Ken Forde.
One of the outstanding collegiate choirs in Ne'w York is the P & S Vesper
Choir, under the direction of Al Mathies and comprised of the P & S student
body and nursing students. William Munsie and Douglas Holsclaw, Jr. are
organists, and Richard A. Anderson is librarian.
An orientation program for first-year students was directed by Fred Allen
and Howie Roffwarg, with the assistance of Ellyn Jones, Leonard Wheeler,
John Eleuteri, Gene Phillips, and other members of the second year class.
Ansis Muizniefs was the chairman of a special committee participating in
a national Y.M.C.A. program to raise funds to be used in relief work with
Hungarian students.
The Columbia-Presbyterian Society for Medical History is affiliated with
the P & S Club and the Medical Library. The program for the past year included
a series of lectures on the history of diseases, extensive investigation into the
problems of medical education, and numerous outside speakers on a variety
of medical topics. Uri Barzel was president of the group, and Charles Neave,
Mark Mueller, and William Duncan were committee members.
Sterling Tignor, chairman of the Movie Committee, provided many Friday
evenings of entertainment in Bard Hall with the assistance of Ralph Warton
and Mark Mueller.
The Overseas Medical Project, with Ken Forde as chairman carried on a
very successful drive for clothing, books, and instruments for the Severence
Medical School at Seoul, Korea.
Extensive use was made of the Record Library of the P & S Club, and
new additions expanded the wide variety of music available for student use.
LeRoy Constantin is chairman of the committee.
Under the leadership of Howie Roffwarg, the Committee on Religion and
Medicine sponsored a widely heralded and popular conference in the fall.
The panel, composed of notable psychiatrists and members of the clergy, dis-
cussed the topic of "Guilt and Illness." In addition, there was student partici-
pation in the banquet and the discussion sessions. Also on the committee were
Donald Pugatch. Kenneth Forde, Fred Allen, Joseph Anderson, Andrew Ferber,
Bradley Gordon, Reddington Barrett, and Warren Seides.
Students this year showed great interest in meeting members of the faculty
informally and discussing some of the ethical and social concomitants of being
a doctor. The Student-Faculty dinners are one of the channels for this activity.
At these off-the-cuff sessions thirty-five students a"nd two or three faculty mem-
bers exchanged ideas on the problems of the Doctors extra-medical role in the
community, management of the patient when he cannot cure the disease,
specialization, the ethical problems in termination of pregnancy and the delivery
and management of anomalous children, and the prolongation of life in in-
capacitating conditions. The success of these programs was due in a large part
to the candor and enthusiasm of the students and faculty and to some extent
the intermittent efforts of chairman Andrew Ferber and committeeman Bradley
Gordon.
One of the most unusual and successful facets of the P & S Club program
is the committee for Theater Parties with Peter Pressman as chairman. Through
advance selection of the season's hits students were afforded the opportunity
to be among the first to enjoy a wide variety of theater activities.
On the lighter side of life, social chairman Robert Reiss assisted by a
combined Bard Hall-Maxwell Hall committee, provided weekend social events
with numerous successful Sunday Coffees and Record Dances. In addition, a
very popular square dance was arranged by Fred Pittman.
Through the weekly Vespers Services the P & S Club offered to the student
body the opportunity to hear some of the nation's outstanding clergymen. The
large Vesper Choir rendered the anthems and the Christmas Service. Brown
Dennis is Chairman, and Kenneth Forde is Co-Chairman. The committee
members are Richard White, Evelvn Richter, Fred Allen, and Robert Jones.
